Bio
there is nothing like good music to soothe the soul....hence the term..."Soul Music".
People ask me all the time..."Lee..do you remember the song by....?" I just love people who love music.Music is the purest art form...and i'm all about the arts.I enjoy a nice painting,a creative sculpture....and the sound of song.I get asked the question all the time...who do i listen to when im not on the air.Well, that is a very long list...my music taste varies in as vast as the arts will go.Of course,my strongest affection is Contemporary Rhythmic music. That can go from the coolest of Soul music,to Classic R & B,and i love the up and coming R & B artists that really have strong voices. If a person can sing without a microphone thats a sign...that person can "sing"! I love the job that have because i do live the lifestyle of the R & B and Old School Station.I am not just on the radio...i live and breathe it all.
When it comes to the history of what the contemporary artists have to say about the learning how to sing,or who influenced them, and it always comes back to some type of soul/r&b artists.
From JAMES BROWN to ARETHA FRANKLIN,these are the mainstream artists that many refer to respectively as the Godfather of Soul and the Queen of Soul...and respectfully so...but they are at the forefront of so many artists that came before them that may not have fit the image for some record companies of that time, which meant that so many great artists didtn even get recognized because they werent pretty enough or in other words, didnt have the "marketability" for the mainstream artists...even James Brown didnt get his due until his later years.....but on that note,i never forget about all the artists who played many a smoke filled room singing and playing their hearts out....the sign of a true artists. These days its so about money that its hard to distinguish true talent versus, digital a manipulated sound.
For those like me,and for those new to sound of V101.1,take some time and listen to your old cd's,and some cases, cassettes(smile),and even in other cases...ALBUMS(VINYL)yeah!
Keepin' the old school alive! Let me the first to tell you...old school will never die.Between the bands at your local nightspot doing the cover songs,to the Hip Hop artists, using "our" classics as the foundation for laying their sound.Take time and think about some of the music you listened to growing up.Remember going over a friends house and listening to music? For some reason,it always sounded good listening at someone else's house that at mine...did that ever happen to you??
Sometimes,i just have to make time to sit back and listen to some old Al Green....some Temptations, from the 70's like "Standing on Shaky Ground"..to the 80's when the Temps were produced by Rick James, and recording such favorites as "Standing on the Top"!
I have always had a special place in my heart for the harmonizing of groups. The Temptations were always musically pure, along with theWhispers, and the Manhattans...but something that struck me with these groups as well, was not only their melodic harmonies, but the "air of sophistication" that they carry. It not only made me proud in how they were being represented, but it gave me a sense of sophistication as a young age.
Now i do have some true eclectic tastes, from my college days listening to Gil Scott-Heron,Dee Dee Bridgewater,The Blackbyrds, and of course Dr.Funkenstein himself..."GEORGE CLINTON",and who can forget "BOOTY COLLINS!" Of course when it comes to the funk.....there is nothing like the dynamic duo of the coolest rhythmic guitar and baddest funk thumping bass player ...none other than the guys who were in total obscurity as studio musicians for Quincy Jones, but their talents could not be supressed..im talking about the BROTHERS' JOHNSON! Oh those brothers as bad!I got a chance to listen to them doing a sound check a few years back when we booked them for our New Years Eve party...it was a true jam session...i had to pinch myself to make sure i wasnt in heaven.
Now when it come to the seven wonders of the world....there has been much debate as of late...let me be the first to say that the only wonder of the world in my mind is STEVIE WONDER...the GENIUS! One of the few to go from child star to one of the most respected men in the music industry. His lyrical genius along with his melodic musical compositions are second to none. His innovative synthesizer techniques rewrote the history books as to how the future of music was going to be impacted by this digital technology.
I can go on and on in trying to give a synopsis of Lee's music appreciation...but before i finish...i wouldnt be complete unless i mentioned the group i literally grew up on....the elements...the elements of sound....EARTH,WIND and FIRE !!! Earth,Wind and Fire has so much meaning to me.I was first attracted to EWF when i heard one of their songs, and thought what a great sound....funky,smooth,but spiritual and positive.I thought the music was off the chain...but i began to listen to the lyrics from every song on the album, and i began to realize, there was a touch of mysticism.Of course in the 70's early 80's,every one was trying to find themselves, and i utilized their oneness to maintain the balance i was searching for.To this day...one of their songs from the "Spirit" album...the song was, "Burnin Bush".....such meaningful lyrics.I still use that song for inspiration when i need a pick me up.There is my inside to EWF,but then to catch one of their perfomances...takes you to another level.
now here this...the PURPLE KING of the World.... PRINCE ! A true pioneer...a legend...damn tha brother can sing...write...kicks ass! There is a following of Prince fans that some people will never understand....who cares!?Prince is the man! He does it his way...sticks it to the man....and the ladies love him! That's my kind of star...
Now when we get to the 80's i can go on and on..."After 7"(one of the most underappreciated groups in the world)...what a mark Teddy Riley made.Guy...Blackstreet.... Then there's my favorites like D'angelo,Ready for the World,Avant,Montell Jordan,Kirk Whalum....and the gospel of Kirk Franklin!
As you can tell....i love the V101.1 Music...and i have just skimmed the surface of my music tastes, but i just wanted to give a little taste of who i am and how music has shaped my life.... One thing i can say about the music we play.i really love it when artists from other formats and genres does a copy(cover) of a old school classic....the music will never die. I'll always do my part...and im asking you to do your part...."celebrate the music".
WILL THE REAL LEE PERKINS PLEASE STAND UP!!!
I've been in radio for what seems like most of my life. Like so many childhood successes that I have seen from many of today's entertainers...(although I haven't gone off the deep end, a la Bobby, or any other names that might come to mind). I started in radio at the tender age of 17 in a town called Fresno. It was the beginning of the radio bug that hit me and has never left. KLIP were the call letters and I was the "Gopher" of the radio station. "Go" for this, and "Go" for that. I remember a little grocery store across the street and it had a butcher shop. One of my tasks everyday was to go get 3 slices of bologna for my General Manager...now that's "old school!"
But that is where I got my start in learning every aspect of the radio station. It is in the smaller stations that all the duties are done by one or two people, whereas in a much bigger station in the bigger cities, it can take a staff of 20 or more people to do some of those same tasks - which is why I always say, if you can get a job in a smaller city, you'll gain more knowledge and experience that will take you a lot further in the business.
After spending 2 learning years at KLIP, I decided that if I wanted to really make it big, I should follow the path of some of radio's biggest stars, and so I enrolled at the Don Martin School of Broadcasting! Once I got to Hollywood, I was ready to take it to the next level. I was ready to take on television, after all, I watched enough of it! While taking classes at the broadcast school, I noticed many picture on the wall of former students who were now Hollywood's most sought after game show hosts. I soon learned that most of the hosting in the game show business belonged to an elite group of the same hosts, and I came to the reality that this was not going to be my future, so I focused back on radio.
A short time after my quick stint in LA, I moved to the Bay Area and landed a job at KSOL 107.7 FM. I spent over 13 years as a number one DJ there. It's amazing how many of those listeners have moved to Sacramento.
On the streets I often get asked, "Are you the same Lee Perkins from the Bay Area?" So if you are one of those people who has wondered the same thing, well, now you know. It's the man with the fingersnap! And now I've brought my fingersnaps to V101.1 FM and I'm on a mission to "Bring Back the Fingersnap!"
Fun, fun, fun! For a lesson in fun, keep it on V101.1. This page will continue to be updated frequently. It is under construction. Be on the lookoout for more fun from the Fun Doctor! Take my class, Fun 101! |

Two Greats in Entertainment Immortalized
Thursday 08-14-2008 7:57pm PT
another great comedian moves on to the great stage in the sky...Bernie Mac!
Tuesday 08-12-2008 10:28am PT

Lee Remembers Bernie MacEver hear about someone in the entertainment world passing and it hits you so hard it's almost like you lost a family member...well,that was the feeling i had when i heard the news about Bernie Mac.I wanted to share with you the particulars about his final days...here's a great story to read...
Bernie Mac’s wife and daughter were with him until the very end, says the late comic's sister-in-law in a personal and touching interview with PEOPLE that took place Saturday.
Speaking of a heartbreaking moment between her younger sister, Rhonda, and the 50-year-old actor-comedian – who succumbed to complications from pneumonia in a Chicago hospital at 2 a.m. Saturday – Mary Ann Grossett says that the night before Mac died, "He struggled for his life. He couldn't breathe.
"He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, 'Don't leave me … 'I'm waiting for you to come back.' He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that's when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired."
Rhonda, Mac’s wife since 1977, and their 30-year-old daughter, Je'Niece, were with him when he died. "[The doctors] were working on him," says Grossett. "They tried to resuscitate him two times. One time he came back for about an hour. Then he went into cardiac arrest the second time."
Prior to that, the couple had last communicated on July 31. "He told his wife [non-verbally] that he could breathe on his own, and he wanted the ventilator out. He motioned that he wanted it out," says Grossett.
Lung Disease ContributedThe sister-in-law says Mac's inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. "He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission," she says. "But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection ... He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that's where the pneumonia came from."
She reveals that Mac – having trouble breathing and running a fever – was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator.
"He was critically ill when he was in the hospital," says Gossett. "He was in intensive care the whole time."
She adds that doctors kept the star sedated, although he was conscious at times and he contracted a second strain of pneumonia while in the hospital. His Wife's ReactionOf her widowed sibling (like Mac, Rhonda is 50), Grossett says, "She’s devastated. However, she's at peace about his transition because of her faith in God. Her faith is what is sustaining her."
She says of the couple's enduring union, "They had 30 years of marriage. That's unprecedented in today's time, particularly for celebrities. That brings joy to her. They loved each other and respected each other on a daily basis. She was by his side to the very end."
Recalling the couple's early years, when they were still in their teens, Grossett says, "When they started dating, he said, 'Girl, you better come on board this train, because I'm going to be rich.' And her response was, 'Okay,' and they were married. That's how he charmed her, with his sense of humor."
She adds, "When they got married they were kids. He was 20 and she was 19. They both grew up together, and they both matured in this marriage. 'She's Going to Miss Him Dearly'"What she will treasure the most is the fact that she was his wife for 30 years – and not only was she his wife, but she was his best friend. She's going to miss him dearly."
Mac’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, at an undisclosed location. The family requests that donations be made to the Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis, 40 E. Ninth St., Suite 601, Chicago IL 60605
Isaac Hayes...a icon in music, the mellow voice before Barry White!
Wednesday 08-13-2008 11:13am PT
*Isaac Hayes, an Oscar- and Grammy-winning music icon who helped to usher in the disco era, died Sunday afternoon after he collapsed near a treadmill, authorities said. He was 65. The entertainer was pronounced dead at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis an hour after his body was found by a family member, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. The cause of death was not immediately known. Sheriff's office spokesman Steve Shular said authorities received a 911 call after Hayes' wife, young son and his wife's cousin returned home from the grocery store and found him collapsed in a downstairs bedroom. A sheriff's deputy administered CPR until paramedics arrived. "The treadmill was running but he was unresponsive lying on the floor," Shular said. Hayes was preparing to record a new album for Stax, the soul record label he helped build to legendary status. And he had recently finished work on a movie called "Soul Men" in which he played himself, starring Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday. "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Isaac Hayes, a true historic world music figure," said the Reverend Al Sharpton, in a statement to EUR, who was to dedicate his Sunday night radio program to the late artist. "Isaac Hayes was the first African-American to win an Oscar for a music score but never lost sight of his commitment to his community and the betterment of mankind. He was more than an artist he was a trailblazer, He was an innovator. He was a creative genius. I shall never forget how in the height of his career he still had time to work and lend his celebrity to those of us much younger and at that time who were totally unknown. Even in his later years he never hesitated to appear for a cause or endorse something that he felt was for the good of mankind. He will be sorely missed." With his trademark shades, bald head and deep baritone, Isaac Hayes laid the groundwork for not just disco, but also what came to be known as urban contemporary. He co-wrote the Sam and Dave hits "Hold On I'm Coming" and "Soul Man." He reached his commercial peak in 1972 when he won an Academy Award for his No. 1 hit "Theme from 'Shaft."' Younger audiences are more familiar with Hayes as the voice of Chef on Comedy Central's animated series "South Park." But he left the show a few years ago because he disagreed with its attacks on Scientology, the religious movement to which he belonged. Hayes was born in 1942 in a tin shack in Covington, Tenn., about 40 miles north of Memphis. He was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother died and his father left when he was 1 1/2. The family moved to Memphis when he was 6. Hayes wanted to be a doctor, but those dreams ended and were replaced with musical aspirations after he won a ninth grade talent contest by singing Nat King Cole's "Looking Back." He released his debut album, the poor-selling "Presenting Isaac Hayes," in 1968. He broke through the following year with "Hot Buttered Soul," which contained just four songs but sold over a million copies. His work on director Gordon Parks' urban crime drama "Shaft," a project he had hoped to star in, was the first of many forays into movie soundtracks. He got in front of the camera for the 1974 cult classic "Truck Turner" and had kept busy with film work ever since, recently appearing in the hip-hop drama "Hustle & Flow." Some of Hayes' friends and professional associates have issued statements expressing condolences and shared their memories: • Dionne Warwick, a former musical collaborator, released this statement to Access Hollywood: “I’ve lost one of my best buddies and it is not easy to reckon with,” she wrote. “I know one can never put a question mark where GOD puts a period, so I will not question the Almighty’s decision to call him home. We all know when that call comes we all will answer… Personally, my buddy will be missed for many reasons by me. He was ‘family.’ He will be a part of my musical life each time I sing the song ‘Deja vu’ as this was a birthday gift to me from him. His renditions of songs that I had recorded especially ‘Walk On By,’ in my opinion, ‘the definitive version’ will always be another memory each time I sing it, and the humorous side that he showed few (that I knew so well). My family and I send sincere heart felt condolences to his family for their enormous loss, and we will hold them in continuous prayer.” • African American Film Critics Association president Gil Robertson IV said: “The loss of Isaac Hayes less than 24-hours after Bernie Mac represents a major double blow to the entire entertainment industry, black Hollywood in particular. The art form and expressions created by Isaac Hayes in particular resonated not only in American pop culture but throughout American life. Both are talents that will be missed but always remembered.” • Neil Portnow, President/CEO, The Recording Academy: "Three-time GRAMMY® winner Isaac Hayes was a true renaissance man — singer, songwriter, producer, session musician, actor, activist and more. After laying the groundwork for the Memphis soul sound through his work with Stax Records, his groundbreaking theme song and score for the movie 'Shaft' cemented his status as a musical icon. He was actively involved with our Memphis Chapter, sharing his creativity with established professionals and up-and-coming musicians alike. The world has lost a true creative genius and a passionate humanitarian, but his indelible legacy will remain ever present. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and all who were inspired by the man and his music."

George Carlin...one of the greatest to ever grace the stage of comedy!
Sunday 07-13-2008 1:09pm PT
There could never be enought said about this great comedian....he was the entertainers comedian. He hit the stage before more concerts than any comedian ever,hence..."the entertainers comedian"...you gotta love his take on aging. George Carlin's Views on Aging
Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.
'How old are you?' 'I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key
You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.
'How old are you?' 'I'm gonna be 16!' You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . YOU BECOME 21 YESSSS!!!
But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?
You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.
But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!
So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!
You get into your 8 0's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; 'I Was JUST 92.'
Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. 'I'm 100 and a half!' May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!
HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them.'
2. Keep only cheerful friends.. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath
6. The tears happen.. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
